Don’t Count Me Out So Fast

You must learn to crawl before you can walk, to walk before you can run, to run before you can dance. What she really wanted to do was fly. Maybe not in the most literal sense of the word, but to fly… That would be truly extraordinary, and she wanted to be truly extraordinary. The urge to fly hit her shortly after she drove her first car, hand out the open window, fingers pressed closely together. She could literally cup the wind in her palm. She couldn’t see it, or touch it…not really. But she knew it was there, just as real and as true as anything else in the world, and she wanted it.

Dancing was a second choice, really, but in all her years, it was the closest she could get. It gave her the same weightless, giddy feeling that she imagined the birds experienced as they sliced through the air as easily as a knife through warmed butter. She suffered cuts and bruises, sprains and breaks-the kind of stuff that no one really talks about. On most nights, she came home aching in places that she didn’t know she had, but even then, she couldn’t help but look at the window and smile as the sun sank below the horizon. She knew how it felt to dread the next day and relish it at the same time, and she did, because she knew that there would be pain. There would be pain, but every day, every passing second that ticked away on the clock brought her one step closer to spreading her wings and soaring.

Don’t You Try to Stop Me…

 

Ever have one of those days where you’re pretty sure you fell down the rabbit hole at some point and simply didn’t realize it?

Today was one of those days for me. One of those days where it seemed like nothing was going right from the moment I opened my eyes. One of those days where I spent most of the day wondering if I was in the twilight zone. It was awful. But you know what? That’s okay. That’s my new motto, especially for those days that are just bad from the onset. It’s okay.

It’s okay.

It’s always okay, because until the day I die, I’ll always have tomorrow to wake up, climb out of the rabbit hole or the abyss or whatever terrible funk-land I seem to find myself in, and start again.

And in light of the awfulness that was this day in real life, I decided that, at least in Second Life, I was going to have to most amazing, sunny, fabulous day ever. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the “Garden Party” dress from {Wynd}-a new release from .Penumbra’s recent Spring/Summer fashion week, and a creation from my dear friend… The same beautiful soul who encouraged me to jump into modeling and fashion blogging in SL is the creator of this super cute dress, and the inspiration behind this post.

So (I’m not sure how many times I’ve said this in this blog) thank you again, Tivi, for your friendship, and your funny stories, and late night rant sessions, and little anecdotes and words of encouragement…and now, for opening {Wynd} and showing some of us how it’s done with these bright and fun summery creations.

Seriously, y’all. .Penumbra’s retail sim will be open until the 5th of June, and if you haven’t already checked out all of the awesomeness, you totally should.

Summer Lovin’…

 

Sorry, guys. I may or may not have the soundtrack to “Grease” stuck in my head. That, and as you may know from my last post, I’ve been doing a bit of reflecting on relationships and other ~things of that nature. It’s been a weird couple days, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ve been bad. That’s good, right?

The summer has been a pretty steamy one so far. Trust me. I know… Because we don’t have air conditioning here (yet). When I was looking at some of my fun new purchases from fashion week, I found this cute jacket/dress combo from Jellyfish Creative Studios. I paired it with these awesome flats from Slipper Originals that are available at this round of ReVAMPED.

Let’s talk for a minute about how rare a good pair of shoes for the Slink flat feet are, okay? And then let’s talk about these. They’re super cute. You can customize every element of the shoe with various colors/patterns, which means you can wear them with almost anything! This time, I’ve turned them yellow and black to match this awesome little dress. And of course, because you gotta make sure the nails look good too, I also snagged this super fabulous Art Deco nail applier set from Luna Body art at .Penumbra.

I’m ready for some summer lovin’, yeah?

Except not. I think I’ll be staying away from that for a little while.

Do You Like You?

 

I think we’ve all been there before. In the modeling world, part of the challenge is trying to fit yourself into whatever the “box of the day” is. One of the first things that you learn is that if you expect to walk on a runway, you’re going to have to learn to adapt yourself. You’re going to have to wear things you don’t like. You’re going to have to step outside of your comfort zone and do things you’ve never done. You might be uncomfortable. You might hate it. You might not feel like yourself, but you do it anyway.

Here’s the thing: I think that so many models forget when we’re tackling these challenges that underneath it all, these people are looking at you. If you can’t find a way to be you in anything you wear, then you’re nothing but a walking mannequin. And I know, I know… That’s kind of the point. But I see a lot of girls who get upset because they find themselves in the midst of something that they don’t understand, something that they’d never do, something that is just as opposite of them as the sun is to the moon.

When some girls don’t win a challenge, when they don’t succeed, they blame it on the challenge. On the judges. On the circumstances. I’ve been there. We’ve all done it. But you know what? Recently, I’ve finally started to grasp that if I don’t be myself, if I worry too much about the “box” I’m supposed to be stuffing myself into, then I lose myself, and THAT is when I lose. You can be yourself no matter what challenge you face. And I’m not talking about wearing the same hair, or wearing the same skin. Think about it. Each time you see a challenge, you probably get a mental picture of what that means to you. And I get one. Everyone does–but our pictures aren’t going to be the same.

Stay true to you. Stay true to that picture inside of your head. While it may be “not quite right” for a particular challenge, you are still being you. That’s what everyone wants to see… those little qualities that make us all unique. Don’t ever let the fact that you aren’t just like everyone else deter you. You don’t have to try so hard that it’s OBVIOUS you’re trying too hard. Just be yourself. I wish I could see more of you being yourself. I can’t even begin to explain the wonderful doors that have started to open for me since I started doing this.
