Can’t Stop Now, Don’t You Know…

New Wave Nova 1

Every time I post, I feel the need to share something. Obviously that’s part of the point of posting in a fashion blog. Models across the grid share their fashion finds in blogs all over the internet. I guess the difference here is that I want to go beyond simply giving you links to where to find some of my favorite fashions.

As stylists go, I consider myself pretty simple. I have my tastes, and unless something requires me to step outside of those tastes, I tend to keep doing what I like to do. I think knowing who I am is a good thing. That’s a problem I think a lot of models in Second Life have. Everyone gets so focused on what they think other people want that sometimes, regrettably, they lose themselves in the process. I told myself that I didn’t want to do that, and I will admit that sometimes I have struggled, and sometimes, I feel a little downtrodden because I feel like I’m constantly running, and yet I never move.

I am not the best on the runway. I have a comically old computer with a system that I am lucky runs Second Life, but I still try. If there’s an event I want to cast for, I still go and I do my best to be true to myself.

So when I heard that L’Amour’s 24th Pazzo Style Challenge centered around New Wave influences, I knew that regardless of how badly even the simplest runway scares the hell out of me, I had to give it a shot.

Let me explain.

I was born in the late 80’s. One of my mother’s favorite bands? Yaz(oo). I grew up listening to, and STILL listen to copious amounts of new wave music, and like my mother, Yaz is, has been, and always will be an absolute favorite of mine. I know the words to every song from every album and will shamelessly belt it out like a New Wave Whitney Houston whenever I hear it. Love love love. Talking Heads? Love. B-52’s? Love. Souixsie and the Banshees? Yes, please! The Cure? Berlin? Duran Duran? Blondie? THAT is some kick-butt music.

I have tried (rather unsuccessfully, I might add) to tackle a Pazzo Style challenge or three in the past. I can never seem to hit the mark. But see, the thing is, I don’t really consider myself a stylist. I am just me, and a lot of times, I miss the mark. But this time, as I sat at my computer singing Yaz’s “Don’t Go” into my mic while I shuffled through my ridiculous inventory of Second Life awesomeness, I thought, “Hey, this time, I get to do me. I don’t have to worry about styling what I think the theme is, because for once, I actually know this.”

And that was a proud moment. Let me tell you. Damn, was I proud.

That said, I of course went through my inventory and had some fun. Spunky 80’s glasses? Check. Fabulous pink studded blazer (thanks, Luas)? Check.

I had so much fun playing around with colors and deciding just how I wanted this to go. And of course, as with most things, I went with a (I think) more minimal approach… but again, that’s just me, and it’s not something I’m ashamed of.

I was a little sad that there weren’t more people at this Pazzo challenge. I think the looks that people would have come up with would have been amazing. But what I wasn’t sad about was when I discovered that I had actually won something.

Let me explain again. See, I still kind of fail at this modeling thing about 70% of the time. I go for the things I want, and sometimes I do well, but most of the time it probably looks to others in the modeling world as though I am off in left field picking daisies from the grass rather than paying attention to the game.

There was only one other competitor, so I probably got lucky this time, but this win, however small it may seem to some of you, was huge to me, especially given other circumstances I won’t discuss. But it was a confidence booster. I won, and I won getting to style something inspired by something that I really, truly love. That is amazing, and it made me feel great.

Before I share my styling deets so that you can look as awesome as I do, I am going to share something else with you because I love you. Here’s my favorite Yaz song, “Don’t Go.” It will probably get stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

You’re welcome.
