So, with how I’ve been feeling lately, I’ve been having trouble keeping up with posting on here once a week. Now I’m posting twice in the span of a few hours. I’ve been pretty sick the last couple days, so I haven’t been online much. Imagine my upset when I logged on today and saw that someone on my feed claimed David Bowie was dead.
At first, I shrugged it off. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen some kind of celebrity death scare on the internet. But then I decided to actually look, and unfortunately, it’s all true. The world lost a great man and an amazing musician. David Bowie lost an 18-month battle with cancer, and as I digested the information, all I could think about was all the people I’ve known who have fought similar battles, either public or private. Some have lost. Some have won. I weep for his family, and for his fans and the creative community at large. He was such a powerful force.
I have said it many times before, and I’ll say it again: Cancer sucks.
I was born in 1987 (gasp-now you know!) but my mom raised me on Bowie’s music and other artists that liked to step outside the box. I can’t think of one person who doesn’t know who David Bowie is, and I find myself sitting here, watching the Labyrinth and singing along. At 69, most might say that David Bowie had a “full life.”
I’m going to be frank, though. I absolutely hate when people say that. I don’t care how old someone is. When you’re taken by something like cancer, it’s because the cells in your own body have essentially mutated and are attacking you, eating away at everything. It’s not natural, it’s horrible, and I weep for anyone who has to go through such a horrible thing, no matter how old they are, or how “full” their life was.
While you’re thinking about Bowie and his contributions, please remember that cancer is an awful monster, and also think of those who have won their battles, those who are still fighting, and those who aren’t with us anymore. Wherever Bowie is going, I’m sure he’ll make sure it’s not boring. Maybe he’ll even meet Lolo and my Nana there, too?
